My Graduation Invites

I’m finally graduating college! I am very much ready for it to be over so I can transition to the next chapter in my life.

The first round of printing didn’t go well, so I’ll be reprinting them after graduation. I decided to make postcards. The front is a photograph of an illustration to achieve the illusion of being 3D. The back lists the details of the event in a hand drawn font I created. This is the actual photo and not the photo of the print (which doesn’t look so well). I hope that makes sense….

I used tape instead of glue to adhere it to the paper. I wanted it to “pop” up and have great shadow.

I continued working on the project from my last post. I’ve finished coloring the little boy, and the flowers on his side yesterday. Today I finished drawing and coloring his sister. Next I have to finished the flowers and mount it. I’m thinking of using a light grey matte board. I took some photos with my cell phone, so they might not be the best quality. I’ll definitely use my camera to take photos of the finished product.

I started coloring on my latest illustration even though I’m not finished drawing everything. I was almost close to finished, but when I went off to work I left my enlarged sketched that I needed to trace onto the paper. Bummer…. Here’s what I did:

I found this post card inside a book while at the library. I think someone was using it as a bookmark. The back was blank; it had never been used.

One the back:

“The giant fontomfrom drums, the tall bommaa and the kettle-like atumpan (each in their male and female), form the largest orchestra in Ghana second only to the national drums. The carver of these drums, James Acheampong, dances to their rhythm. In creating these powerful regal instruments from one piece of cordia (Tweneboa) wood, he uses leather, cowrie shells, cow hide, brass and other local materials.”

Here’s a peek at what I’ve been working on. This is the first of a set of illustrations of two children. I want to call the girl Janie, but I don’t have a name for the boy yet. I’m working on another of the two, from a different angle and enlarged a little.

I’ll take some more photos, plus I’ll take some of the art I painted on a canvas bag over the summer. I’ve been using it to carry my class stuff during summer school and I’ve washed it a few times, so hopefully the work looks as awesome as the day I painted it.

Stumbled on: Children’s Books Illustrations

Vintage children’s book illustration are a passion of mine. The colors, layering, and textures are what usually pop out to me. With this book it was the cute, little, black girls on the cover…something I didn’t see much of in my books as a child.

I found this randomly in the library, and I loved the cover so much that I decided to scan and blog about the cover illustration. I love the details, the hair, clothes, faces, and especially the girls’ loafers. Adorable!

Art on Campus

I decided to showcase art installation on campus here at the University of Houston. Here’s a student project that was in the Fine Arts Building last semester. It’s the head of a dragon made from paper. It looked great. The paper dragon scales make a beautiful texture.

This second one is more current and can me found in the College of Architecture. I’m going to guess and say this is laser cut aluminum or steel. I love the overall shape and the floral pattern cutouts.
